Web Design - Frequently Asked Questions
If you have a question about web design that you would like us to answer send an email to faq@mwi.com.
Q: Do you offer web hosting?
A: Let's get this one out of the way right now. No, we don't offer web hosting, but we do have a recommended provider, namely IX Web Hosting. They're an inexpensive, no-frills, web hosting provider that we host many of our sites with and have recommended to many a client. They offer both Linux and Windows hosting packages.
Q: What is good website design?
A: Design that generates results. Results happens when individuals skilled in business and brand strategy, information architecture, and graphic design produce a website design solution that is customized to meet a particular client's business objectives. Good web design is a means to an end, not the end itself. The end is increased revenues for the client and a positive return on investment.
Q: What is your web design process?
A: Research, plan, architect, design, and build. Those are our five primary steps. Research and planning means learning about our client's business, identifying the target audience, defining what we want them to do on the client's website, and creating a plan to measure whether they are doing what we want them to or not.
To architect means "information architecture" which means developing the structure, form, and functionality of the website. This is done by creating a visual sitemap and then a working prototype of the website. A prototype is created so that changes in the structure and/or functionality of the website can be implemented quickly and easily before a design is applied to the structure.
Only when the structure and functionality of the website are clearly defined do we start to design. We generally provide 2-3 designs for the client to review, and once a design is selected we go through a process of revisions until the client is satisfied. Once the various page designs are completed, our expert HTML/CSS programmers build out the site. Back-end programming, copywriting, and other services are provided where needed.
Q: Have you ever done web design for my type of company?
A: As our client list grows so does our experience. We have worked in many industries and with many different types of companies, from law firms to bed and breakfasts, from technology to tourism, and from medical to magazines. Chances are we have done work for companies like yours, even if you don't see it on our client list, which only represents a selection of our clients. However, even if we haven't worked with a company like yours the principles and the process we follow enable us to deliver great results which we have done time and again for clients who were the first of their kind to come to us.
Q: How is MWI different from other web design firms?
A: Most firms focus on doing good design. We focus on doing good design that helps our clients make more money. To that end, we provide a host of other services that can add value to a good design such as search engine optimization. Not only do we provide these other services, but we know how to do them well. We have experienced staff with skills in HTML, CSS, PHP, .NET, ASP, W3C, MySQL, Linux, 508 compliance, information architecture, internet marketing, webpage development, Javascript, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Fireworks, and more.
Q: What if my company is not in Utah, can MWI still meet our needs?
A: MWI is a Utah web design firm, but we have clients across the United States in places like New York, Virginia, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Boise. Between travel, phone, email, and our online project management system we can provide a working relationship that is 99% of what you would get if we were located down the street from you.
