SEO Consulting, Sample Recommendation - Link Building Basics, How?

Of course it's one thing to know why you should do something and entirely another to know how to do it. When it comes to linkbuilding there are three primary ways you can do it:

  1. Create your own links
  2. Recruit links
  3. Buy links

Create your own links. What other website properties does [client parent company] own? Do they all have links somewhere on them that point to the [client URL] site? If they have links from the homepage so much the better, but if not from the homepage then the closer the page is to the homepage the better, since the homepage is considered more important than any other page by Google and therefore a link on another site's homepage carries more weight. And of course you can create more links by creating new websites for that purpose, but of course that requires a bit of work and so I wouldn't consider it one of the first things you should be doing.

You can also create your own links by posting on websites such as blogs and forums. It wouldn't take too much effort to create an account and start posting. However, many forums require you to be registered for 7-10 days and/or require you to post at least 10 times before they will allow you to insert live links in your comments. Still, it's a fairly easy way to go. To find good forums and blogs simply search for some of your keywords + "blog" or "forum" and see what comes up.

Recruit links. This is the best way to get links, but can also be the hardest, and brings us to the terms "linkbaiting" and "linkbait." Linkbait is content that is so very, very interesting that lots of people want to see it and lots of people want to link to it. It could be textual content, but it can also be videos, artwork, resources, or what have you. It's just anything that is super interesting and/or useful. I'd focus on the word "useful" rather than interesting. If you can create parts of the [client URL] site that are truly useful, and free, then chances are people will start linking to it.

Buy links. This is the easiest way to get links, but not the best way. Still, in some cases it's so easy you might as well go ahead and do it. One resource that may be valuable to you is [vendor name]. He manages links on a large number of .gov and .edu websites (which happen to be seen as more credible domain extensions than .com, .org, or others). You can contact him at [phone number] or [email address] (I'd recommend email) and tell him about [client URL] and see what he recommends for you. Chances are he can hook you up with 50+ quality links and he might have some other ideas.

Two other "link brokers" I trust are http://www.text-link-ads.com and http://www.textlinkbrokers.com. The latter tends to be a bit more expensive, but you often get what you pay for.

Linkbuilding is a almost a science unto itself. There are companies and individuals out there in the SEO field who do nothing but build links for their clients. The information I've given you is the most basic information, which I believe will keep you plenty busy and give you the best results.
